About The Lidcombe Program
The Lidcombe program is a stuttering treatment
program developed by the Australian Stuttering Research Centre.
It is an early intervention behaviour based program
designed for children who have developed stutter
speech in the age group from 2 - 6 years old.
The program involves the parents being taught
to monitor the child's speech on a daily basis looking for
incidences of stuttered speech and offering supportive and
encourage corrections to these dysfluent moments with more
fluent speech.
The program is conducted in tow phases.
Typically the first phase lasts about 3 - 6 months and involved
the parent and child returning to the clinic on a weekly basis.
The second phase is the maintenance or stabilization stage
where the child's speech is monitored for any further
stuttering over a 12 months period.
Studies on the Lidcombe program has been
found to be very positive in correcting the speech of
pre-school children and is most effective in children up to the
age of 6 years old. Beyond that age the results are not as
effective.
